Reportedly reflecting on the breakup of The Beatles, Paul McCartney, in a yet-to-be-aired episode of BBC Radio 4’s series This Cultural Life, set the record straight on who was behind the decision to split up the band. “I didn’t instigate the split. That was our Johnny,” he said of John Lennon in a preview of his interview shared on The Guardian.

“John walked into a room one day and said I am leaving the Beatles. Is that instigating the split, or not?” He also added, “This was my band, this was my job, this was my life, so I wanted it to continue.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, McCartney, while referring to the spilt as the most difficult period of his life, said the remaining members were left to pick up the pieces in the confusion that ensued after Lennon’s departure.

This year, McCartney  announced that he will recount his life and 65-year song-writing career in The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present. It will be published in November.
The 960-page memoir, comprising two alphabetically arranged volumes, will feature McCartney talking about his songs, and musical inspirations.
